About Mikey B.
My work is a process of experimentation, risk taking and following my gut instincts. Colour is the key and I like to approach a work with almost reckless abandon and look to steer it in a way that sparks my interest and feels at odds with the art I see around me. I think about painting in terms of abstract composition even if my paintings end up tied to something recognisable. Often I'll begin a work with no plan of an outcome and just start working at the blank surface with colour to give myself something to respond to and layer upon. Sometimes things come together quickly, other times it can take months.
From the age of 17 to 32 my artistic outlet was music. Exploring and developing a love of all types of music but ultimately rooted in a passion for lo-fi punk rock and especially the DIY ethos that comes along with it. Ultimately realising that the magic was in the attitude, the rawness and the energy above all else.
It was only after moving to Bermagui on the far south coast of NSW that my drawing and painting practice, which I did obsessively as a child and early teen, resumed with a vengeance and I've gradually learned how to translate all I discovered through music into painting. I have had 3 local solo shows and been a part of several group shows so far and was awarded 2nd place in the River Of Art prize in 2018.
